If you spent your Christmas period shamelessly binging a show about a psychopathic stalker, then you weren’t the only one. Netflix’s You has quickly become a phenomenon and it’s all anyone can talk about right now.
The ten-episode series, based on Caroline Kepnes book of the same name, follows Joe Goldberg (played by Gossip Girl‘s Penn Badgley), a bookstore manager with a habit of falling head-over-heels in love with deadly consequences.
It’s a deeply disturbing series but so damn addictive to watch. Considering the buzz the show has generated, naturally, the series will be back and we’re a little desperate to find out what to expect.
(FYI Some season one spoilers ahead!)
Everything we know so far about season two of You:
Who is returning?
We know that Penn Badgley is coming back in the lead role of Joe, which is obviously all that really matters. As for any of the other characters in the first season, he killed most of them so the second season will likely showcase some fresh faces.
The main exception is John Stamos, whose character Dr Nicki was framed by Joe in the final episode, but the actor has yet to confirm he’ll return.
What will go down in season two?
The sequel to Kepnes’ original novel is titled Hidden Bodies, so I think we can gather that Joe will continue to clean up the mess he created in season one. In the second season, Joe moves from New York City to Los Angeles. The book’s synopsis reads:
Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.
In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbour. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder.
It’s important to note, however, that the second series won’t strictly follow what goes down in the book. Co-creator and co-showrunner Sera Gamble told Vulture “We are planning to diverge a little bit more from the second book than we did from the first, which was a very tight examination of this one relationship.”
One of the major loose ends in need of being tied up is that bottle of urine Joe left in Peach Salinger’s house. With private investigator Officer Nico on the case and revealing to Joe in the final episode that they found items with potential DNA evidence from the house, this will surely come back to bite Joe.
Gamble revealed that the second season will delve more into the past and Joe’s disturbing upbringing at the hands of Mr. Mooney.
“Joe was taken in by a guy who had a certain type of life philosophy that really did rub off on Joe. Joe was already a teenager by the time he even met Mr. Mooney. There’s a lot more to explore about Joe from earlier in his life. Those are the things we’re starting to get into for season two”.
What does that cliffhanger ending mean?
That cliffhanger ending had us all losing our minds as we find out that Candace is alive. Thankfully, she will get a chance to tell her story in season two. “Candace does indeed have a role in season two,” said Gamble. “I can say she’s not feeling particularly disposed to be nice to Joe. Joe wasn’t very nice to her, and she’s not feeling all that charitably toward Joe.”
When can we expect to see it?
There’s no official premiere date but the good news is that season two of You is already filming, as Gamble confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The show’s Instagram bio says the next season is “coming soon” so we can safely assume it will drop in the second half of 2019.
Where can I watch it?
